The Internet is a massive and ever growing collection of interconnected computers. Computers from all over the world are connected to what is generally referred to as an Internet web. Any computer on the Internet can reach any other computer on the Internet unless steps are taken to control access. A machine in China can reach a machine in Ft. Worth just as easily as one in Arlington can.

Since the contact happens electronically, there is no outward indicator that shows a hacker is attempting to break into a computer to gain access to confidential information. Without any technology to thwart a hacker, it is as though an invisible man has entered your place of business through an unlocked door, and is rummaging around your computer network looking for whatever he might consider worth stealing or vandalizing, and you won't even notice it's happening.

Dedicated Internet Connection:
Dedicated Internet connections are the connections of choice for businesses. These connections are on continuously 24 hours a day 365 days per year, and can use various technologies supplied by the phone company. ISDN, xDSL, and T1 connections are the most common. Cable modem connections are normally not available to businesses and even if they were, their inherent limitations arbitrarily imposed by the cable companies make them undesirable.

The reason businesses want a dedicated Internet connection is due to the fact that many of the services commonly associated with the Internet run non stop day in and day out. Email, WEB, FTP, E-Commerce, and several other services have become indispensable business tools. That always on feature also provides the hacker an opportunity to attack the site any time of the day or night
